Please reblog my brother’s scholarship entry!! Obama—friend of the gays, friend of the under-privileged and friend of the economy (oh, I went there)

pseudoknots:

In order to get more of a conversation going on this, please reblog! :)

My support for the President manifests itself in three main categories: the economy, LGBTQ equality and general policy changes. Obama has done so much for our nation during his first time, and he has so much more to finish during his second term.

The Economy

Was Obama handed the worst recession since the Depression by Bush?

                        Yes.

            Did Obama destroy our economy?

                        No.

            Has Obama improved the economy?

Yes, the U.S. has added more than 3 million jobs since Obama took office.

What else has the President done for our economy?

  • Policies have slowed the recession—less people are talking about depression, and more are talking about recovery!
  • Obama has begun discussion on regulatory policies on Wall Street
  • Obama’s policies have added 3 million jobs since 2008
  • Obama attempted to institute a Jobs Act in 2011 which was destroyed by the Republicans in the House of Representatives

 LGBTQ Equality

I’m a gay male involved in LGBTQ activism—I’m 100% for full equality under the law, and 100% against laws that limit the rights and freedoms of LGBTQ Americans.  What has Obama done for me in that regard?

  • Repealed Don’t Ask Don’t Tell (2010)
  • Stopped defending the constitutionality (read: the unconstitutionality) of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) (2011)
  • Increased federal benefits for spouses of gay government workers (2008)
  • Signed the Matthew Shepard Act (2009)
  • Ended gender-identity discrimination in the government (2010)
  • Ensured hospital visitation rights for LGBTQ families (2010)
  • Has been openly supportive of the LGBTQ community—he made an It Get’s Better Video
  • Led a UN coalition to include sexual orientation in the UN charter of Human Rights
  • Hosted a summit focusing on gay bullying at the White House (2011)

Obama has done so much for the gay community, and for that reason alone he’s my man in 2012. The President has shown himself to be a true advocate for equality during his four years in office.

 General Policy Changes

What else has this guy done to get my vote?  Let’s just list a few of the accomplishments, shall we…

·         Obama has made education a national priority

·         Obama has extended pell grants to American students

·         Obama has been lobbying heavily for the extension of low student loan interest rates which directly impact ME as a student

·         Obama has passed universal healthcare (Affordable Care Act) which gives millions of under-privileged Americans access to quality health insurance.

·         Obama has eased international tensions on the United States—his speech from Cairo was groundbreaking.

·         Obama has drawn the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to a semblance of a close.

·         Obama has focused on the environment like no president before him

·         Obama closed Guantanamo Bay, which I have been morally opposed to for years.

Let’s be honest, you guys…

But really, in the end, why do I like President Obama so much?  Aside from his policies, aside from the rhetoric, Obama is relatable. Obama is not disillusioned, he isn’t hidden behind a screen or a mask, and he most certainly does not make my mother’s salary in 22 hours.  President Barack Obama has my vote this November (the first vote I have ever made as a U.S. citizen) because his policies are working to revive the economy, because he has made LGBTQ equality a priority and because he cares—he listens—and, above all, he can relate to the every day American citizen.
